NEW HOPE FOR CANINE DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY
Canine degenerative myelopathy is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of the spinal cord with no known cure. The disease resembles Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in people and inevitably leads hind limb paralysis in our dogs, progressing to the thoracic (front) limbs. The prognosis for this heart breaking condition is poor. Most dogs are euthanized within 6 months to 3 years of diagnosis.
New research examined the long term clinical course of the disease in Pembroke Welsh Corgis (PWC) and the therapeutic benefits of curcumin. Study results suggested curcumin may have neuroprotective properties and SLOW DISEASE PROGRESSION !
In addition to it’s known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, curcumin has 3 benefits on muscles:
❶ Boosts protein synthesis (process of creating protein molecules)
❷ Decreases muscle degradation (muscle atrophy)
❸ Reduces muscle damage and soreness after exercise
Do you add curcumin to your dog’s food? What do you feed your best friend?
Studies such as this one provide further evidence that while there is no known cure, steps can be taken to SLOW the DISEASE PROGRESSION. With dogs with DM, we may not see typical improvements expected with dietary changes and canine rehab, however SLOWING PROGRESSION IS AN IMPROVEMENT!

Note
Helping dogs with DM takes a multi-modal approach and requires empowering the dog parent with education and resources to care for their best friend. This is what we do within “Living with Dogs with Degenerative Myelopathy. The Program 2.0”. A comprehensive group support and coaching program for dog parents of dog’s with DM.
